EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS DESIGN FOR CURRENT POST-DOCTORAL PROJECT

I have designed and manufactured a true triaxial loading apparatus which consists of:

  • 60 MPa confining pressure vessel

  • Three sets of servo-controlled hydraulically operated actuators capable of loading up to 500 kN in three separate directions on cubic samples

  • Six-axis dual intensifier pore-fluid pressure system for testing water and gas permeability on jacketed samples

  • Installation, setup and programming of LabView software for operational control and data processing

This machine has been used for geomechanical testing of rocks in three-dimensional stress and strain fields. Data acquired will be used to understand how permeability (a fundamental property of rocks and geo-engineered materials) evolves under truly triaxial stress conditions.

BIAXIAL APPARATUS FOR METRE SIZE SAMPLES - APPLICATION TO BLOCK CAVING PROBLEMS

Screen Shot 2021-09-15 at 15.54.06.png

In order to understand the influence of elevated horizontal stresses on block caving processes we reconfigured an existing large-scale biaxial press in the Geotechnical Lab of PUC. Using metre size blocks of carefully characterized rock analogue materials, deformation was monitored with LVDT's and image reconstruction techniques.
